In Baars, at the edge of the Woldberg hills, a small team works with the horses every day. Here you can see where they live, how to find us and who looks after them.

The yard in Baars

Room to work, room to be a horse.

The stable moved from Vledder to Baarsweg 14 in Baars: a quiet spot with plenty of space, in the rolling countryside of north-west Overijssel.

The horses work in the 20 × 40 m indoor arena or in the full-size outdoor arena. They also spend plenty of time outside, turned out together in the paddocks and fields beside and behind the outdoor arena. For us, that time outside is simply part of the training: it is good for their welfare and for their development.

Getting here

Easy to reach, quietly tucked away.

From the A32 motorway it is five minutes to the stable. Heerenveen, Steenwijk, Meppel and Zwolle are all within half an hour’s drive.

Marten and Romy ride the horses; Lieke, Astrid and Hilda make sure everything around them is right. A small team that knows the horses well.

Head rider & trainer

Marten Luiten

Marten comes from Winschoten in the north of the Netherlands and caught the horse bug from his parents. After his pony years with Goldwin’s Hoeve’s Movie Star came the mare Fynona (by Ampère, owned by Stal 104). With her he won Dutch titles in Juniors, Young Riders and U25, and rode his way to the top of European youth dressage.

Since 2021 he has ridden the Both family’s Johnny (Johnson × World Magic). After gold at Z2 (an advanced Dutch level) and bronze at Small Tour, he took him to the top of the U25 division. Marten also trains several horses at the higher national levels and a number of young horses, including the stallion Secret USB, approved for four studbooks: Hanoverian, Oldenburg, KWPN and AES.

  • 13 European Championship medals with Fynona, 5 of them gold
  • No. 1 on the FEI World Ranking in the Junior, Young Rider and U25 categories
  • Member of the Dutch federation’s KNHS Talent Team since 2020
  • 2026 with Johnny: Dutch U25 champion, and at the European U25 Championships freestyle gold (81.565%), individual silver and team bronze

  • Stable rider

    Romy Schaftenaar

    Romy joined the yard in summer 2025 and trains a number of the horses. As a pony rider she won several Dutch titles; with horses she recently became Gelderland provincial champion at Z2 and ZZ-Licht (advanced Dutch levels) and has been placed at Dutch Championships and The Dutch Masters. She competes her own horse Lana Capri at the higher national levels and is bringing on Red Label (by Red Viper), selected by the KWPN for its stallion performance test.

    Lieke Lueks

    Lieke started as an intern in 2025, when the stable was still in Vledder, and stayed on as part of the team. She assists with covering the stallions, grooms at shows, lunges the horses and helps with all the stable work. She competes herself in dressage and with Dutch Harness Horses.

    Astrid Brouwer

    Astrid was already helping out in the early days in Vledder and is now a permanent member of the team. When we are away at shows, she keeps everything running at home. With her own horse she became Drenthe provincial champion at ZZ-Licht, then stepped up to the higher national levels.

    Hilda Luiten

    Hilda helps Marten every day with caring for the horses and the stables. She is the yard’s groom, and a big fan of equestrian sport.
